Typical scenario

A worktop swells beside the sink cut-out: how to reconstruct the circumstances

If a worktop edge lifts or changes shape after a sink is installed, it is important to preserve the area without resealing or repair until documentation has been agreed. A defect’s position near water does not by itself identify whether it relates to the material, cut-out preparation, installation or subsequent use.

What needs to be clarified

The examination could establish the type and extent of deformation and its relationship to accessible features at the sink–worktop junction. It helps to distinguish what the present condition supports from what is known only through participants’ accounts.

Materials to prepare

  • The contract, worktop and sink specifications, cut-out drawing and available manufacturers’ installation and care instructions.
  • Photographs before installation, after assembly and when the defect was noticed, including the underside and nearby joints.
  • Installation records and dated information about leaks, repairs, applied compounds and changes in condition.

What to compare

  • The deformation’s position and extent relative to the cut-out, joints, fasteners and accessible surfaces.
  • Whether the actual junction matches the agreed construction and requirements applicable to the specified materials.
  • The sequence of signs and other possible moisture entry routes supported by the supplied materials.

Possible outcome of the analysis

A possible output is a diagram of the affected area, comparison of records and physical signs, and conclusions on the explanations that can be assessed. Possible restoration work is considered after the damage has been characterised.

Limits of the conclusions

Photographs may not show the concealed cut-out edge or substrate. Inspection involving removal or sampling is agreed separately; the date a defect is noticed is not necessarily when it formed.
